Alhama de Granada, named from the river Alama, is described by the Rough Guide as one of the 'unsung gems' of Granada Province. It claims to have numerous visitors but is not much 'sung' in English and it's certainly a real 'gem.' Despite the impression given in guidebooks, it is accessible by public transport either from Granada or, once a day, from Torre del Mar or Velez-Málaga. The latter crosses a superb pass at the Ventas de Zafarraya.Either the beautiful buildings or the location on the edge of a great gorge would be sufficient reason for a visit. The combination makes it one of the great sights of Andalucía, comparable with the much better known Ronda. One desirable extra comes with the balneareos, hot springs where people bask in a water temperature of 49 degrees in pools from a warm spring - with a cold river rushing only an arm-length away. For this take the Granada road about 2km and turn left just before the bridge to go through a short but very scenic gorge
